Assignment - Laser Cut Linkage Prototype

Part 1 - Inspiration: Look for a video online of an automaton that uses a linkage (most do!) You can look through the inspiration channel on Slack or look through past lectures to find references to different artists.

Part 2 - Study: Once you find a video, focus on the area that uses linkages and create a study of its movement in MotionGen. If the mechanism is a complex network of multiple linkages, feel free to simplify and study a portion of it. Create a screen recording of your MotionGen study.

Part 3 - Laser Cut Prototype: Export your MotionGen study to a PDF or SVG and manipulate the links and components to a reasonable scale in Adobe Illustrator to be laser cut. Prepare a file for the laser cutter (if you need assistance, start with the ITP tutorials, ask your buddy from class or schedule office hours with shop staff) and then fabricate your prototype from acrylic or chipboard. Your prototype should be two dimensional like in MotionGen. Create a short video clip showing your result!

Your blog post for this assignment should include the initial inspiration video, your screen recording of your MotionGen study and a video of your laser cut linkage model.

Post your initial inspiration video, your screen recording of your MotionGen study and a video of your laser cut linkage model to your blog by midnight 10/09. If your blog post link changed for this assignment, please DM it to me.

Midterm Prototype

Don’t forget, your midterm prototype is also due on 10/09!
